Case Study – Explosion Generated by Mechanical Transportation Systems

NEUMATIC TRANSPORT with ATEX concept

On February 7, 2008, at IMPERIAL SUGAR COMPANY (Port Wentworth, GA, United States) a large explosion and a massive fire caused the death of 14 people and injured 36 others, including 14 with serious burns that put their lives at risk.

The cause of the explosion was the overheating of a bearing in a conventional mechanical transport system that generated combustion of the sugar dust in the atmosphere, causing an initial explosion and subsequent explosions and secondary fires.
